Top 10 Unusual Web Sites for Your Non-Profit
 

The Internet has become a valuable non- profit tool for acquiring breaking news, researching potential funding sources, getting jobs, etc. Of course, most of you probably know of the common non-profit-related web sites such as the Foundation Center, the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Guidestar. In this week's Rich Tips I'd like to share with you some other sites that you might not be aware of, but that offer excellent information and resources.

  1. About's Non-profit Pages at www.Nonprofit.About.com -- I've been subscribing for free to this site for many years. It's a general purpose site that has excellent material dealing with non-profits.
  2. Association of Fundraising Professionals at www.nsfre.org -- This is the AFP's trade publication and is filled with excellent articles on the ethics of fundraising and public policy. They also have an great non-profit-related book store on the site.
  3. Board Cafe at www.boardcafe .org -- This site has an electronic newsletter that is an excellent source of information on boards of directors but also offers news, tips, opinion pieces and other information that will be helpful to your board members.
  4. Compass Point at www.compasspoint.org -- Compass Point is located in California and provides a wide variety of capacity building services. They also have an excellent Web site loaded with information on best practices within many fundraising, management and leadership topics.
  5. Non-profit Genie at www.genie.org -- I really like this Web site because of its great articles, publications and information.
  6. Grassroots Fundraising Journal Online at www.grassrootsfundraising.org -- The guru of grassroots fundraising, Kim Kline, developed this Web site. Kim has been conducting training sessions and writing books on grassroots fundraising for 30 years. Her site offers practical, how-to tips on most grassroot strategies from direct mail to major donor issues to special events to on-line fundraising. She also has a free electronic newsletter you should subscribe to through the Web site.
  7. The Non-profit Center at www.nonprofits.org -- The Non-profit Center is another great site that is just packed with information on organizational, management, regulations, and resource development issues. There are also excellent FAQ pages on many non- profit topics.
  8. Npower at www.Npower.org -- Npower is a network of independent nonprofits that are providing accessible technology services to grassroots groups around the country. Npower is funded through the Microsoft Corporation. There are excellent links, tools and relevant articles and stories that will help you with your computer, software and technology issues.
  9. Philanthropy News Network at www.pnnonline.org -- The Philanthropy News Network, based in North Carolina, is a philanthropy news e-magazine that updates daily to keep you abreast of non-profit-related news and strategies from around the country.
  10. Stanford Social Innovation Review at www.ssireview.com -- Stanford Social Innovation Review is a professional publication that is based out of the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University in California. There are many excellent, high level articles that are well researched, documented and written. Check out the article, "A Failure of Philanthropy," on their home page – its well worth reading.
